2015 House Design and Remodeling Trends

Every year there are many new trends that cause homeowners to desire updates and changes in décor. For 2015, most homeowners looked for ways to improve their homes. Some of the more popular design trends were not a fad, but a style that is likely going to stick around for a while.

Two-Tone Cabinets

Those in Sioux Falls looking for a stylish kitchen design may have noticed the popular trend of two-tone cabinets. Installing cabinets of all one color or stain is the traditional way to design a kitchen. However, many trending homes are now painting their lower cabinets a different color than the tops. A homeowner might paint the bottom cabinets a darker grey, blue or brown and then pair them with a white, tan or lighter upper color. The two-tone approach makes the kitchen space seem larger and brighter without the inconvenient problem of light-colored low cabinets that will get dirty quickly, according to many design experts.

Smooth Ceilings

For years, the popcorn ceiling was popular before it became more popular to feature the Spanish Lace texture. Today’s typical home buyer, however, prefers a smooth ceiling. Smooth ceilings are easier to paint and do not have a distracting texture that could clash with the room.

Painted Wood and Brick

While it is popular to keep old trim the natural wood in historical houses, it is very popular to paint the more recent trim a light white or off-white color. Painting 70’s and 80’s style trim brightens up the space and makes it easier for homeowners to match their furniture. Some wood colors clash easily with other furniture pieces, making it difficult to work around the trim. In the same way, it is increasingly popular to paint a brick fireplace in order to reduce the feeling of unmatched color, distracting texture and dirt build up. Some homeowners choose to stain their bricks, resulting in a more custom color for their fireplaces.

Unique Front Door

The durable door at the front of a house might be painted a bright or bold color to add additional attention to the entry way. Homeowners enjoy using their personal taste to pick a color that best merges their style with the appearance of the home. A front door can be a different color than anything else on the house, but it still must match in design to coordinate with the home. Popular door colors include plum purple, brick red, royal blue and mustard yellow.
